Scripture for the Father Who Is Doing His Best
Written by the Scripture Nook team · May 14, 2026
"Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord."
Most fathers carry a quiet weight. The weight of providing, of protecting, of being the calm in the room when their own heart is not calm. The Bible does not pretend this is easy. It calls dads to a kind of love that is gentle, present, and unhurried.
Ephesians 6:4 is striking. The first instruction is about restraint, do not exasperate. Then the second is about formation, bring them up. Good fathering is both. The 'not' matters as much as the 'yes.' Children are shaped as much by what their fathers refuse to do as by what they choose to do.
If you are a father today, you do not need to be perfect. You need to be present. The Father who has loved you steadily is the model. Borrow from His patience. Imitate His tenderness. Your children will remember how it felt to be near you long after they forget what you said.
A Prayer
Father, You are the perfect picture of fatherhood. Make me patient where I am sharp, present where I am distracted, gentle where I am tired. Shape me into the dad my children need, and let Your steady love flow through me to them. Amen.
